The Insider's Opinions
Item "Q": This are the client files for a 5-15 person law firm. If the files are in this state, the office manager doesn't care enough, in the Insider's opinion.
Item "F": This is a reasonably well-organized filing room for a 4-6 lawyer operation.
Item "G": This is the document sign in/out log sheet.
Item "H": This pile of papers are waiting to be filed by the Filing Clerks, after the lawyers have dealt with them. In a class-action law firm, there will usually be a second shift of File Clerks, due to the volume of paper. In the Insider's opinion, at least 2% of the documents will be misfiled or lost.
Item "H": This law firm does not have a computerized (redundant) document filing system. A computer-savvy paralegal or junior lawyer is usually running the document-scanner, because every document must be text-tagged and graded for importance to a case. If a law firm does scan and grade documents "to disk" (i.e. computer), that is an excellent indication that the law firm is serious about winning their cases. If you are looking for a contingency-fee law firm, or have a big-bucks civil case, ask the law firm to show you their document scanner or electronic filing system.
Item "A": If the client files are stacked vertically, against a wall, or one file on top of another, it means that this law office doesn't have enough space. In the Insider's opinion, this is a very negative indicator.
Item "D": This lawyer's chair is too close against the wall. This lawyer will suffer from negative Chi, in Feng Shui terms. The trash basket, out in the open yet close to him, makes his office look kinda' trashy, too. The Insider is guessing that this lawyer's work suffers from the negative immediate surroundings.
Item "C": In the Insider's opinion, the lack of personal momentos and gifts from happy clients in this law office could mean that they haven't done well for their clients. When a lawyer wins several million dollars for a personal injury case, a happy client will sometimes send a large, meaningful gift, such as a bronze sculpture, to the law firm as a 'thank you' present.
Item "K": In the Insider's opinion, this could be part of the "filing system" of a one-man law firm. The Insider suggests that seeing something like this is not an indicator of a well-run office.
Item "N": These documents have been grouped and will be bound for a Motion Record.
ACTION POINT: In the Insider's opinion, the client should very carefully check all court documents to ensure that no important relevant papers are left out. Should the law firm make an error, it will be client who will pay for the mistake.
